Spring Into Action: Waste You Can Upcycle

As a homeowner, you’re likely accumulating a lot of waste over the course of a few days/weeks, and it’s important that if you’re not properly recycling or throwing it out, you do something productive with it all. Below are just a few upcycling projects to think about when it comes to your waste and how you can give it new life without being too wasteful!

Bottle Decorations

Bottles made from glass can be a critical and extremely useful part of your arsenal of upcycled goods. Their long necks allow you to use them as mini vases, holders for pens/pencils, and even as an apparatus to store things like olive oil, with the right top installed. Additionally as a bonus, a bottle cutter and some sandpaper can turn used and boring bottles into rounded glasses to reuse, wash, and fill with your favorite beverages.

Cutlery

If you’ve ever thought to yourself about becoming someone who works with metal, old cutlery can be a great place to start! By bending, cutting and contorting them in specific ways, you’re able to affix them onto a wall, onto a wood board or something similar, and use them as a key holder, jacket holder, or even a horizontal rack to put a long broom or umbrella on. Give this a shot before you throw that precious steel away!

Cookie Cutters

Old aluminum cans are perfect solutions for those cookie cutter shapes you just can’t seem to find in stores. By carefully cutting the cans and taping them in a way that forms shapes, you can use them (once clean and edged) to cut raw cookie dough into fun and intricate shapes that turn boring cookie designs into something totally unique and fun!

Remember, recycling doesn’t have to mean the end of a product’s life -- upcycling turns things into new projects and ideas that help you stay green and creative for years to come!

Waste FAQ's: A Refresher!

If you haven’t navigated to our site or asked a question in a while -- or you’re just curious about the waste process at home, make sure you figure out what’s what at home, and decide on what you’re required to do with your waste, recycling, and any other processes that deal with waste at your home. Below are a few FAQ’s to keep in mind and consider when thinking about your residential and commercial waste.

WHAT CAN AND CANNOT GO IN THE GARBAGE?

For the safety of City Carting workers please remember to double-bag harmful products before discarding in your regular garbage, and please do not discard:
  • Sharps
  • Broken Glass
  • Paints
  • Florescent Bulbs
  • Pesticides
  • Cleaning Products i.e Bleach, Ammonia
…and the like

WILL YOU COLLECT EXTRA BAGS?

Always fill your cart first before putting out any additional garbage bags.

Your black cart can hold three to four standard-sized garbage bags. If your cart is full, excess bags can be set one foot away from your cart for collection at no extra cost. We recommend you use standard-sized garbage bags that are strong enough to hold the contents and weigh less than (40 pounds) each when filled. If you can easily lift the bag with one hand, it should be okay.

During periods of high volumes of garbage, such as spring and fall, we will collect waste in black carts but may limit the number of extra garbage bags that are picked up to ensure everyone gets service. If we are unable to collect your extra bags, please store them on your property until your next collection day.

DO I NEED TO BAG MY GARBAGE?

Garbage must easily fall out of the cart when tipped into the truck. You can choose whether or not to bag your garbage before placing it in the cart, with the following exceptions:

SHARP OBJECTS

Wrap and place in puncture-proof containers.

POWDERS, DUST AND ANIMAL WASTE

Double-bag items and and tie them.

STREET SWEEPINGS

Put gravel, dust, rocks and other debris into a garbage bag. Double-bag and make sure it is under the (40 pound) weight limit.

GRASS CLIPPINGS

Place in garbage bags to ensure it easily falls out of the cart when tipped. To reduce the amount of grass clipping waste going to the landfill and to improve the quality of your lawn, we suggest leaving your clippings on the lawn.

Get Rid Of Trash Odors At Home

Walking into your home after a long day of work is supposed to be a relaxing feeling, as you kick off your shoes and plop onto the couch. But when you stroll in and the first thing you’re greeted with is a foul odor, a relaxing night can be overshadowed by the smell permeating through the rooms you’re intending on relaxing in. Below are a few tips and tricks to follow to rid your home of bad odors and keep it smelling fresh and relaxing all year long!

Disinfect

Bacteria grows quite literally, everywhere. Closer to your sinks and garbage disposal, the amount of bacteria can be much higher, and thus require much more extensive cleaning. Because of this, it’s important to constantly disinfect as much as possible, even cleaning the seams, corners, folds, and insides of garbage cans, sink counters, knobs, faucets and more. By doing so you’re killing off bacteria that can otherwise spread and cause foul odors to form.

Waste Regimen

As food and other perishable items pile up, it’s important to get rid of them before they become a problem. In many cases, food begins to smell bad shortly after it reaches room temperature, which is when bacteria grows the quickest. Combat this by throwing it outside, having routine waste collection set up, or even freezing things like food and meat until it’s time to throw it out!

Quick Fixes

If you’re in a pinch -- and we’ve all been there, you can do things like light candles, bake a loaf of bread, use natural but fresh-smelling sprays. And so on. These short fixes might get you through an evening where company is coming over, but it’s certainly not a long-term fix and the odors should be properly addressed before it becomes unbearable.

Different Roll-Off Container Ideas For Your Business

As a business owner -- whether you’re in a retail setting or a corporate office, there’s going to be garbage. Where there’s garbage, there’s odors, buildup, and mess. So when your business is overflowing with bags, food, paper, electronics, and other items, it’s essential to enlist the help of someone who can take it all away and keep your space tidy and clean. That’s where we come in! See below a few options you have as a partner of City Carting:

Front/Rear Load

If you’re looking to throw away a decent amount of garbage but need bins, large enough to hold it, a front or rear load container is usually a great fit. This container sits outside of the complex in an easily accessible area for things to be thrown out, and eventually, picked up as well. Our trucks come by once or twice per week, pull it up and toward the back, and empty it. Afterward, we’ll set it back down where it belongs, and you can begin the process of filling it back up!

Larger Roll-Offs

For more bigger buildings and projects that require more materials, a large roll-off might be another safe bet for you and your business. This is available in a number of sizes as well and can be up to 40ft long, built for the largest of projects. We’ll come to drop this off, take it away, and leave another one if you continue to need the space and the capacity for large amounts of waste.

Regular Pick Up

If your waste isn’t as much as you think it is, we do also offer regularly scheduled pickup dates where you can toss your garbage into small bins, and we’ll come by, all the same, pick them up, empty them, and place them back down for you. Either way, when it comes to your waste, no matter the size, we’ve got you covered!

Chemicals To Not Use in 2020

With 2020 being a new decade, it’s worth taking a look at some of the things that have occurred
in the years past, and adapt or adopt new techniques that improve your quality of life, and impact
on the environment as you perform them. In terms of cleaning, chemicals readily used at home
can pose an airborne threat to you and your family/friends, so it might be time to do away with
them! Here are a few things to consider and what you can chuck into the trash and replace this
year.

Artificial Scents

We know that artificially scented cleaners are better because they make things smell better,
right? Well, if it’s only put that way, sure -- however there are some other issues lurking you
may not be aware of. Because these companies aren’t legally required to disclose the chemicals
used to make these fragrances on the bottle, you’re never sure what you’re inhaling or cleaning
with, which can be toxic and bad for everyone in the area.

Sudsy Soaps

In many cleaners, ingredients such as 1,4-dioxane, DEA, TEA, sodium laureth sulfate and
other chemicals are a big issue as they are known carcinogens that can cause toxicity in your
organs. While it might not be a huge issue to use these very sparingly, it’s recommended that
you do not inhale these things, and stick with the soaps that are much more natural and built
for simple cleaning, and that’s it.

It’s important to be educated on a lot of the things you’re spending your money on, as they
can pose serious health risks if used incorrectly. Make sure when you’re buying cleaning products,
you’re inspecting labels, and purchasing something that is scent free, all natural, non-corrosive,
and certainly not toxic in large amounts. This can help you improve the quality of your living,
improve air quality, and so much more at home.

3 Things That Can Improve Your Home's Health

As a homeowner, priorities run rampant, and it’s important to make sure that everything you do
inside your home, helps both you, the people inside, and your home itself. Many people might
ask themselves what home health is -- and the answer is quite simple! Measure your home’s
health by its air quality, cleanliness, structural integrity, appliance operation and more. To keep
all of these things in check, it’s important to take a bit of time and learn what you can do to do
so.

Routine Maintenance

It’s been a while since you’ve called a plumber over to inspect your pipes, right? Likewise, the
last time an air conditioner tech came by was a few years ago -- and that should change!
Just because something isn’t broken doesn’t mean it doesn’t warrant a bit of attention. Make
the necessary appointments and shell out a few dollars just to be sure. The last thing you
need is an unexpected emergency in the middle of the night. We’ve been there, and we do
not recommend.

Air Quality

Something you do without thinking about it is breathe -- and indoors, the air quality can
change over the course of a day, week, month and so on. To combat this from becoming a
problem -- especially when it’s cold and flu season -- is to keep things fresh and circulating.
Bring air in from outside and force some of the stale air out a window. It’s nice to have a rotating
flow of air -- especially when things can seem thick and muggy throughout the winter.

Waste

If you haven’t hopped on the waste train, make sure this is something you try doing as soon
as possible. It’s nice to know that every few days, the waste you accumulate can be picked up
and hauled away with little to no work on your end. With someone scheduled to come and do this
for you, the process is so much easier than you might think -- and it’s well worth the money!

How To Show Your Home Some Love This Month

With Valentine’s Day coming up, your kitchen and dining room will likely be full of candles,
chocolates, and red/white floral arrangements -- and while we do agree that your loved ones
deserve the attention during the holiday, your home also should be entitled to some recognition
as well! This holiday, make sure you’re showing love to the thing that keeps you dry and warm
all winter long!

Mild Cleaning

By taking the time out to do a bit of cleaning on your own, it benefits not only you but your home as well! A little wall scrubbing and floor cleaning go a long way, especially when it has the ability to kill bacteria and rid your rooms of specific odors that might have been lingering for a bit. Additionally, this prevents other things like mold and mildew from forming which can be a
huge pain to get rid of.

Improving Air Quality

It can get stuffy during the winter months, so making the air a bit cleaner and better smelling is certainly something that should be on your list. By baking bread, lighting candles and circulating air from outside in, you’re freshening otherwise stale air up a bit which can really help in making your life a bit easier, and make laying around on the weekends much more pleasurable! Give this a shot and see it if it helps!

Organize Your Waste

Another thing to consider is the notion that your waste can and should be altered a bit in
order to improve the quality of living at home. Separating your food from plastic and your plastic
from sensitive materials not only makes it easier on you to throw things out but the companies
who take care of those articles have an easier time separating as well and can help get items to
the places they need to be in order to be recycled, etc.
