How You Can Reuse Old Items in Your Home!

Saving money and waste is something we love doing at City Carting — and we’re constantly striving to be better at that each day! What comes with the reality of your waste also is the reality that it can be saved and used later on for something useful and fresh! Take a peek below at some of the upcycling projects we’ve compiled for you below!

Wallpaper Clock

Instead of looking for texture on the walls, why not apply that to a clock? With any old clock, you can remove the outer trim if it exists and create a flat profile. From there, take any old paper you have (like wrapping paper or fabric, and wrap the face of the clock! Using an adhesive, you can keep the look flat and flush without much work, which creates a whole new item in your home — and saves you money from buying a new one!

Custom Bookends

Nobody uses house phones anymore, right? Of course not! Why not take some of those old pieces of history and turn them into something creative? For example, that old wired telephone can be sourced at yard sales or even off of your wall! Grab one of these and affix it to a thin piece of metal or piece of plastic on the bottom. This can be done with industrial-grade glue to hold it in place or by drilling holes through both items. Once finished, you can paint it any color and then place books between the two!

Denim Coasters

Instead of throwing those jeans away (if they can’t be donated), why not turn them into something vintage and functional? Cutting denim into ⅜” wide strips a few feet long will allow you to roll them into a circle that acts as a coaster. Grab an adhesive or a needle and thread to keep it in place, and place on counters! These also help insulate surfaces from hot and cold drinks!

Of course, not everything can be turned into something cool, and for those things, that’s ok. Just make sure your waste is being taken care of by someone who can effectively take it away and bring to necessary parties!

Fun Recycling You Can Do In 2019

We know — it’s too early to think about the cold! Or is it? In fact, with fall right around the corner, there’s a lot of things that entails. With the favorites being pumpkin patches, apple cider and hayrides, the season brings a ton to do! And at home, fall is especially important as well. That’s why recycling should be on your mind — to keep you and your home healthy! Take advantage of the season and start these projects for easy and fun fall activities.

Leaves

One of the best ways to keep your leaves year round and get good use out of them is to use them as firestarting logs for your bonfires and firepits. Simply pack them into a bucket and dampen them, pack them in to dry, and then when they’re dried out they double as a starting log!

Plastic & Glass

It’s always fun to create lighting outside that is cheap and effective. With plastic and glass, you can create different lighting fixtures that both look great, and help you light the way without breaking the bank or needing to buy a new product. This is a great way to tastefully accent your home on a budget!

Recycle!

Small projects even as simple as creating a home-made dog bed from blankets and an old storage bin are great ways to stay green and make a difference. A project like this needs nothing more than your old bin, a blanket, and an x-acto knife to cut the hole big enough for your furry friend. This keeps them warm in the colder months as well if they’d like to play!

Of course, managing your waste is also a great tool to have in your back pocket — and it can save you time and effort! Enlist the help of a service who is committed to hauling away your trash each week, where we can make great use of it for the future!

Keeping Animals Out Of Your Trash This Fall

One of the absolute last things you need is to wake up to your garbage spread out across the lawn, with the reality that it was rummaged through by a bunch of animals while you were asleep. Now, in addition to the fact that you have to clean it all up, you’re forced to figure out how you can prevent this from happening again. While there are some easy fixes to this problem, we’ve also got a few below for you to try out.

Bring Your Garbage Out Late

Instead of letting the garbage sit in the bin for a few days, bring it outside the night before. This won’t always be a sure-fire answer to the issue, but it will help you get some of the trash out of the path of raccoons and other animals. The less they smell when they’re roaming around, the better — and less for you to have to clean!

Lids

Some garbage tops don’t come with lids, and if this is something you don’t own, it can be an issue. Instead of risking it, purchase bins with lids on top and have it latched down at night so that it’s impossible for a small critter to open it. This keeps smells out, and also deters them from coming back in the future once they know it’s impossible for them to break it open.

Bungee Cords

If you do have lids and the animals are still getting in, they might have outsmarted your current attempts to keep them out. Instead of letting this happen, grab a set of bungee cords and latch the lid down with some extra force. This is a perfect way to surely keep them from entering the garbage, as the force of the cords is much more than they’re capable of unfastening. This way, everything stays safe and inside the can until it’s picked up!

If a service is something you’re also in need of in terms of your garbage, make sure you’re enlisting the help of a company with a proven track record of success. City Carting is manned with over 11,000 happy clients who choose us to take care of their waste — you can be our next one!

3 Things You're Missing At Home

As a homeowner, whether new or old, you’re likely constantly learning how to best
manage your waste, organization, and your home as a whole! What comes with those
experiences is usually a purchase of some sort, which improves that process; and these
purchases can be a few dollars or something a bit larger to accommodate your needs.
Below are a few items that can improve the quality of life at home, and help you improve
your overall process!

Separate Garbages

It’s important that in 2019, you know that many things don’t go in the same garbage can --
and the best way to solve that is to have multiples! If you’re the super conscious type, keep
three separate cans -- one for food, one for recycling, and one for food waste. This way you
can properly separate all of them and make sure that everything is always where it needs
to be when it’s collected.

Bungee Cords

In addition to being great at latching down a new mattress or piece of furniture, a bungee
cord can be a great option for you when it comes to holding down your garbage cans so
that critters don’t get in where they shouldn’t. These bundles of cords can be had for a

very low price and pose a lot of benefits in many aspects of daily life.

Compost Heap

As mentioned above, keeping food separated can be a great solution for those looking for
another option and another way to keep their home a bit more green. This compost heap

will allow you to repurpose old food into new soil for your plants, which is a huge plus!

Of course, conscious waste management is also very necessary -- and making sure this
practice is done on a constant basis requires someone who can effectively haul your garbage
away when you need it gone!

City Carting Commercial Solutions

As a business owner in the CT area, it’s important to make sure that you’re ready for all
seasons, and your business stays ready and profitable -- and clean! While it might seem
like enough to make sure your storefront or office is clean enough, the garbage and the
waste you produce on a daily basis also needs a place to go, so it’s important to do everything
in your power to maintain curb appeal for customers, and cleanliness for the both of you! Below
are a few commercial options that you and your business have with City Carting.

Roll Off Services

It’s important that at the end of the day, there’s a place for all of your garbage, no matter
how much. For businesses that produce more than just a garbage bag full each day or so,
a roll-off container is the next best option that provides a massive benefit to everyone. This
rolling container can be either front or rear load, and contain a ton of waste to be picked up
locally by a truck on a rolling (get it?) basis!

Large Drop-Off

For larger remodeling or garbage ridden projects, a drop off container is something to
consider -- especially given the size! This can help for those looking to complete something
huge or just need a temporary solution for a larger task. Our trucks can drop one off in your
area and you can keep it until it’s no longer needed! This option is great as it requires nothing
but a phone call on your end -- which is a benefit within itself!

Of course, there are many options for businesses looking for a commercial situation -- and in
many cases, City Carting can handle large-scale projects no matter the size!

Summer Items That Don't Go In The Trash

As summer rounds the corner into one of its final legs, it’s important to, as a home or
business owner, refresh on what is and isn’t supposed to be in the trash! Even though
it’s likely already a routine for you and those who live/work in your building, there’s nothing
wrong with taking another look at your habits, and looking for a way to improve.

Old Food/Leftovers

We know how easy it is to take your plate and scrape it into the trash, even if there’s a bit
of food leftover -- and while that sometimes is OK, it’s also important to know what is and
isn’t going to smell bad, and attract unwanted attention from nocturnal critters looking for a
meal. Instead of throwing this away immediately, place your extra food in a separate bag and
throw it in the freezer until it’s time to take out the trash. This prevents odor, and in turn,
animals! Additionally, you can also begin composting certain foods for nutrient-rich soil.

Excess Plastic

Opening a brand new supersoaker for the kids is a great way to keep them entertained and
cool on a hot day -- but the packaging they come in, among many other things, is less than
ideal for regular trash. No matter what, it’s important to always check in on your local ordinances
for what to do with plastic garbage, and if you can safely throw it out a different way. Additionally,
some of these packages are made of rigid plastic, which prompts you to need to be careful,
and think of who is handling your trash afterwards!

Electronics

Sometimes a good garage cleaning is in order when the weather is nice and you can entertain
a quick sale of old items. Instead of just tossing everything away, including old batteries and
outdated electronics, make sure you’re putting some of your things in a recycling bin to bring
somewhere for safe disposal! The acid and components inside these items should always be
thrown out safely -- no matter the season!

Does Humidity Attract Bugs and Critters To My Waste?

During the summer, we experience a number of different conditions that can make living
at home comfortable and enjoyable, and some that can make it difficult and tiring. On one
hand, enjoying the warmth and the sun is great, but the humidity that comes with the warmth
is rarely welcomed with open arms. With all of these factors in mind, it’s no surprise that your
waste can experience adverse effects as well. This may be why you’re experiencing more
bugs in your area when the humidity is higher -- let’s examine why:

Moisture

Many bugs are simply attracted to moisture, as it helps them thrive. This is one of the reasons
you’re going to find more bugs in a basement at times -- they love the moist climate! Knowing
this, it’s obvious to assume that because the air is dense and moist from the humidity, more
bugs will come out to play. This can lead them to scurry through your property, into your home,
and around your waste

Smells

Because of the nature of summer, hot air and humidity can send odors from your waste into
the air, which is likely very pleasing to certain bugs. Pests like these that are attracted to human
food will be able to smell the garbage as the sun makes it hot, and the scents travel through the
moist air. This is just another reason as to why proper storage and effective cleanup is imperative
during the warmer months of the summer.

Should you experience any of these symptoms at home, make sure to have your waste picked
up in a timely manner, and out of sight from other pests and bugs. The better you have it sealed
in bags and in your garbage can, the less chance you have of bugs living around your area
waiting for a snack.
