3 Best Practices For Recycling

Recycling at home is something very important to us, and it should also be important to you! As a collective, our recycling habits can make a positive impact on the environment, and improve our daily lives in the process. Instead of consciously throwing things out before determining if they can be recycled, it’s a good idea to take a minute and assess the situation. For the things that do end up getting recycled, there are a few best practices you can follow to streamline the process.

Cans And Glass

For cans and glass that get recycled, a good idea is to clean them before tossing them in the bins before they’re hauled away or brought outside. Due to the nature of what is sometimes inside these glasses and cans, the contents can attract bugs, critters, as well as give off odors that can make your home stink. A quick rinse with water (and a dab of soap) is more than enough to prevent intrusive odors and guests from getting into your home.

Paper

With paper, there’s so much more that can be done instead of throwing it out. For the colder months, it provides makeshift insulation for pet homes, can be used as firestarters, or paper mache for a weekend project with the kids! While it’s perfectly OK to recycle your paper where applicable, it’s also a good idea to see if there’s another use for it at home, before giving it away.

Bottles

For plastic bottles, there are an endless amount of things you can do to give them extra life. One of the biggest contributors to waste is how many water bottles are thrown away each day. Instead of opting for this method, try reusing one for a few days before switching to a new one. Additionally, you can take a water bottle and turn it into anything, such as a bird feeder or garden sprinkler!

Providing homes and businesses with effective waste management is a service that City Carting & Recycling has been doing for over 35 years.
