Residential Waste Tips

When it comes to waste at home, there’s a lot more than you might think. Each day, we’re throwing out a number of things that can either be reused, or don’t need to be bought in the first place. There’s no escaping having some kind of waste when the trucks come, but you can do your part in reducing the amount you’re bringing to the curb.

  • Think about the things you use the most. At the dinner table, try cloth napkins instead of paper. You can wash them, and not worry about throwing so many away. This includes plates, too! Reusable cutlery is a great way to reduce your plastic usage.
  • When it comes to water and beverage intake, why can’t a reusable mug work? The average person is supposed to drink 8 glasses of water per day -- that’s 4 plastic bottles. You can reduce that to 0 by investing in a tap filter and a sport bottle.
  • At the grocery store, opt for canvas bags. They’re cheaper, more durable, and better on the environment. Additionally, for smaller purchases, decline the bag the product comes in. It will likely end up in the trash.

Other types of waste sometimes cannot be repurposed, but there are a lot of ways you can reduce the amount you’re throwing out; With summer approaching, this might be something to think about before your guests arrive for that barbeque!
