3 Things Every Home Needs For The Trash

At home, there are a number of things that you’re usually supposed to check up on — and your garbage is one of them! In terms of efficiency and cleanliness, a few factors come into play that make all the difference when it comes to your habits and how you handle the load inside. Below are just a few of the things or methods that should be adopted when it comes to your waste and how you can stay on top of everything dirty.

Easily Separate

One of the easiest methods to increasing your waste productivity is to separate everything from the get-go when it gets tossed in the trash. While this might seem like a lot of sifting, it’s actually much easier than you might think. Your paper should be disposed of in one box (if dry), and the normal garbage in the other. In the third can be your recyclables which take on a totally different form of life once they’re brought to a facility to be broken down and reused.

Reduce Odor

We can’t promise that all of your trash won’t ever smell, but there is something to be said about those who are actively trying to reduce the odors themselves. By adding odor eaters and keeping the inside of each can clean (typically once bi-weekly or monthly), you’re killing any bacteria, mopping up any spills, and preventing from permanent smells from entering the home.

Can Tops

This is a major key that many people forget once the garbage heads to the outside of your home. A top or can lid is extremely important to not only have, but to use as well when you’re at home. This prevents messes caused by critters and unwanted animals who generally look near the garbage for a snack at night. This will keep odor and garbage inside, as these ‘visitors’ tend to forget to clean up after themselves.

Additionally, there are a number of ways you can actually improve the life of everyone in your home with simple changes — and City Carting can help bring those! We have over 11,000 happy independant customers who are focused on making your trash disappear and head to where it belongs!

Reducing The Smell Of Garbage

The last thing anyone wants a whiff of is smelly garbage in the house. While it’s understood that no matter what ends up getting tossed away will eventually have some sort of odor, it doesn’t always have to be overpowering or in a place with high-traffic! Below, we’ve got a few tips and tricks to keep in mind that may help you reduce the smell in your home from unwanted garbage.

Meat

One of the most important things to remember about meat is that once it becomes warmer, the scent will arise and become stronger. Because of this, it’s important to be more mindful of when you’re tossing it into the garbage and when that garbage goes out to the curb. If you’ve got a few days before this happens, consider placing the unused, leftover or expired meat in the freezer and let it freeze until then. This way. There is no smell and it stays out frozen for most of the time it’s in the garbage — until it’s safely away from the affected area.

Garbage Placement

Of course, the location of your garbage can is also a big factor in keeping the smell away from you. If it bothers you a lot or you’re someone with less room throughout the house, maybe consider keeping your garbage can right outside of a door, or in a cabinet in the room. This saves space and masks the scent from ever re-entering the room!

Compost/Recycle

Another simple hack to your waste management is to reuse and recycle as much as you can. Tossing old food into a compost heap can get rid of the odors quickly and provide you with rich soil in the future, while recycling can get the bottles cans and more out of the way and into an area where when taken away, will have a second lease on life.

Of course, the garbage eventually has to go somewhere — and we wouldn’t want anyone else to take it from you! Join the City Carting team and be one of over 11,000 who are completely satisfied with our services!
