Mindful Holiday Waste Management

The holidays can get pretty hectic. With family and friends coming over, the house can fill up quick, as well as the garbage can. Between food and gifts, there’s a lot that goes in and comes out of the house, which can cause a mess. What many fail to realize however is the difference they can make by switching up tactics when the garbage can is expected to fill up. Below are a few things to make sure of during the holidays in order to secure your home and keep it looking the way it should.

Extra Food

There’s always a bit of leftovers during the holidays. With so much food going around, it’s sometimes hard to finish it all, which can pose a problem. Instead of allowing this to happen, invest in tupperware that you don’t mind losing. This way, you can hand out portions to people who are leaving, ensuring that it’ll get eaten for lunch the next day, instead of ending up in the trash. Alternatively, donating uneaten food to a shelter or pantry can be a much better answer than letting it sit in the fridge until it’s bad, or worse, throwing it out.

Wrapping Paper

Contrary to belief, most wrapping paper isn’t actually the type of paper that can be recycled. Instead of tossing it where ti doesn’t belong, make sure it ends up in the trash with the rest of the garbage. Should you think of another use for the paper, you can also include it in packages sent to friends and family, to keep fragile items safe. They can also be used for makeshift insulation, and other uses. Recycling them however creates unnecessary work for your waste management company -- avoid this at all costs.

How You Can Make An Impact At Home

It’s true that the impact we have on society is huge, and everyone’s efforts make up a great deal of how the earth reacts to our usage of its resources. As time goes on, we should be learning to take what we have and use it for our future, rather than allowing it to pile up, and harm the environment. There are a number of different practices that individuals, families, and businesses can all take on to ensure that all efforts are toward conservation, preservation, and a healthier lifestyle.

  • Waste Management. It’s important to look at one of the biggest contributors to pollution there is -- your lifestyle. This is why independent waste management is set up, due to the need for separation and utilization of these items, instead of filling land and waiting for them to decompose. By hiring a service to do so, you can effectively make note of the changes made, separate your garbage before it goes to the curb, and let your company do the rest. (Psst, that could be us!)
  • Composting At Home. We all eat food, and sometimes, there’s just too much on the plate to finish, or there are scraps. While feeding it to the family dog might be a good option, there’s also the chance to create a compost pile, and let it break down naturally. These items will be extremely rich in nutrients and eventually turn into a soil that can be used to fertilize plants, which can grow you new food!
  • Vehicle Choices. In the winter, there are not many alternatives when snow hits the ground and you need to get somewhere -- but there are 3 other seasons during the year! Consider a low emissions vehicle for the months where you do the most driving, and using a bicycle or walking to closer destinations -- overall, you’ll feel better as time goes on as well! This is a win-win situation!

Of course, for #1 you’ll need a waste management company capable of handling your garbage when the time comes to pick it up. At City Carting, we’re proud to serve over 11,000 independent clients who range from small households to large businesses all over the NY and CT area!

3 Reasons for Recycling

No matter how it’s cut, recycling is one of the most important things we as people can do. In order to preserve our earth, we must first combat what we use on a daily basis that can harm the planet. One of the obvious answers comes recycling, which is a huge contributor in preservation. So, why should you recycle? In addition to the benefits that it provides the earth, there are a few that you might find pretty enticing yourself.

A Few Extra Bucks

Recycling is one of those hobbies that can actually make you money, instead of costing you money. When drinking water bottles, cans and other beverages, those cans come with a tax .If you’re the type to stockpile a few, it could make you some cash back on the side! 20 cans equals one dollar, and consistently making trips to the recycling center can add up to some cash on the side for bills or a new pair of shoes!

It Creates Jobs!

Recycling is a $236B industry. This means that every year, 1.1 million people can be employed based on the need for jobs in the industry. If you’re doing your part, it creates opportunities for others who are looking for the chance to make a difference.

New Products

One of the best reasons to recycle comes with the reality that these things get a second chance at life. Recycled cans and paper can ultimately be made into new products that get reused, without the need to cut a tree down, or form new metals using machinery and manpower. Ultimately, this can reduce emissions, and increase the amount of trees on earth which can only aid in keeping our planet healthy.

What You Can Do With Leaves

Household pests are in full swing during the fall. No we’re not talking about bugs, cold weather, or the kids making a mess in the yard. No, we’re talking about a much different pest -- leaves. When the beautiful trees decide to change colors, their leaves are great to look at; until they fall all over the yard. Then, it’s a few hours of leaf-blowing, raking, and the occasional sprint from the dog that ruins your hard work (We’ve been there, don’t worry.) But instead of throwing all of that stuff away and to the curb, here are some other things you can do with your new yard tenants.

Firestarting Logs.

This one is easy and great for those who spend time outdoors with their family and friends around a fire-pit. Grab two 5 gallon buckets, and set one aside. Drill a few holes in the side of the one, closer to the bottom, and throw leaves inside. Next, spray some water inside the bucket to dampen up the leaves. Place the other bucket on top as if you were stacking, and press down hard. Most of the water will escape, and the rest will help compact and bind the leaves together. From here, give it a few days to dry and harden. Take the bucket off the top and slide out your new puck or dried leaves. Break this into pieces and use to start a fire whenever necessary! It sure beats buying one each time.

Compost.

One of the best things you can do for your home, the environment, and your plants, is to assist with going green. These leaves are full of nutrients that when broken down turn into soil that can be used for almost anything. Though this process may take longer than wanted, it proves to pay itself off in the long run. Whether you’re looking for extra soil or something to get your plants growing, this is the easy answer instead of throwing leaves away.

Waste Tips For Autumn

Managing your garbage might seem like a year-round type thing, but in reality, it’s also seasonal! When it comes to specific types of waste, there are a few different procedures that should be followed instead of mindlessly tossing it away. This makes the process much easier for those who are collecting and ultimately sorting your garbage for proper distribution. Below are a few things to keep note of as the seasons make their switch and the temperatures start to drop.

Leaves

Be careful with leaves. Not only do these need to be disposed of correctly, but they may also pose a greater benefit, should you leave them somewhere near home. It’s a good idea to let your leaves dry out and create fire starting bricks from them, if you actively use a fire pit. This can save money and prove to be healthier for the environment. Alternatively, you can also create a compost pile for your leaves and turn it into rich soil for future seasons!

Plastic

Reusing plastic is one of the easiest ways to reduce overall footprint. With the average American consuming more and more water per day, it’s critical to understand that the amount of plastic that doesn’t get used is also increasing. Instead of using these bottles, try investing in a reusable one, and a filter for your tap. This can reduce your plastic usage at home by a huge number!

Of course, mindful management is also a huge part of this process as well, and it’s important to understand how you can make a difference. An independant service is one of the best ways to reduce your footprint and make a positive impact on society. City Carting and Recycling serves over 11,000 residences and businesses, and we’d love to add you to our list of happy clients!

Hazardous Waste Disposal

Everyone knows that when you’re finished with a product or food, it ends up in the trash -- there’s no secret here. But something many people don’t know is the difference between normal waste and hazardous waste. It typically comes down to what it contained in your garbage, and each type varies in how it should be disposed of. Take a look at some of the things below that classify as hazardous and should be disposed of in a different manner.

Car Products

If you’ve recently done an oil change or coolant flush, don’t put the old stuff at the curb. Instead, bring the waste to your local auto repair shop, or an AutoZone type store. From here, you’ll be able to give it to a company that either sends it out for recycling, or uses it for something productive. The same applies to old car batteries. Actually, some companies will give you money off of a new one if you bring in the old one!

Cleaners

We know how important a clean home is -- but a healthy earth is also very important. With household cleaners and aerosol sprays, it’s sometimes difficult to understand where they should go. Are they recyclable? What about in the normal trash? The answer to these questions is typically no, although entirely used and cleaned plastic bottles may qualify for recycling. Hold on to these items until your next household hazardous waste collection program offers a safe way to dispose of this.

If you’ve got other waste to deal with, it might be time to give City Carting a call! We’re contracted by over 11,000 independant clients for their residential and commercial waste management needs. To learn more about how we can help you get rid of your waste, contact us today!

Separating Your Garbage

Believe it or not, your garbage is important, and should be to you. Being mindful of your waste doesn’t automatically turn you into a recycling guru, but it can help in the long run! Ultimately, you should be taking note of your waste and how you manage each aspect. Proper garbage separation is a key to beginning this process -- it makes it easier on you, and for your waste management company.

Put your Recyclables with other Recyclables. This should go without saying, but you’d be surprised at how many different forms of recycled material are found in the trash. Take a look at what you’re throwing away, carefully making sure it belongs there. Sometimes, mistakes happen which is entirely ok, but it only takes a few seconds to read labels and determine what belongs where.

Dangerous Items. Sure, those sharp edged things you’re throwing away won’t bother you anymore, but it does have to be handled by others before it reaches a final destination. Aside from the fact that it may not actually belong with regular trash, it can cause injury for those handling it after you toss it away. We recommend labeling sharp items, or wrapping them in a soft material to make handling a bit safer for everyone.

Larger Items. If you’re handling a garage remodel on your own this weekend, it’s a good idea to grab something to house the garbage afterwards. We’re not suggesting an 18 yard container, but a small one does help your collection service, come garbage day. Full of material that can be sorted and possibly recycled, it’s a good idea to check and see what should be handled by a larger form of waste storage. Plus, it can be dropped off and picked up at your convenience!

For anything related to the need for waste management, make sure you consider City Carting for your next job. We’re equipped with a vast fleet of commercial and residential waste related vehicles to haul off your trash with ease. We would love to speak with you today!

What Can I Do With My Leaves And Sticks?

Fall is here! Fireplaces and sweater season has finally approached! But with the fun of the season comes the abundance of debris in your yard. While it might look great for a few weeks, dragging around a rake every Sunday afternoon is less than pleasing. So what can be done with all of this debris during the fall? Well, before tossing it in bags and out to the curb, think about how you may be able to reuse it at home.

Firewood

Sticks and leaves are great for your fireplace.   Instead of throwing money away on tons of chopped wood, branches and sticks can be great fire-starters. Allow them to dry out and throw them in the firepit with a few piles of leaves! No more cold nights! Plus, who doesn't love the crackling of a fire?!

Fire starter logs

Grab a ton of those leaves and toss them into a bucket. Fill the bucket up with your leaves and paper and then add water. With another bucket the same size, insert it as if you were stacking them for storage. By pressing down on the top bucket, you'll begin packing down the leaves into a big puck. While this happens, the water will drain out from the top (tilting it to allow water to flow may help). Allow this to completely dry and then break apart as needed. Great DIY fire starters!

Compost

Composting is a great way to reuse this material for your own home. In a short amount of time, these materials can be broken down into nutrient rich soil to aid in extending the life of your plants. The best part about it, is that it's completely free! Talk about a bargain.

For all of your other recycling needs, make sure you give City Carting a call! We've been in business for years, offering our service to over 11,000 independent clients. Contact us today and see why City Carting makes the difference you need.

3 Ways To Improve Your Waste At Home

Waste management is something that collectively, everyone must work on. Our planet is ours to preserve, and we must do what we can to allow it (and us) to prosper. Arguably, one of the most important places to start is at your home. Following these effective waste management tips can decrease your own footprint, and provide lasting home benefits!

Composting

Food waste shouldn’t always go in the trash. Effective breakdown of food scraps can always be reused. Combine your food waste and outside brush into a pile and allow it to break down. Not only will this reduce your waste, but it will provide vitamin-rich soil for your home when you need it!

Recycling

One of the best ways to improve your waste management skills is to separate your recyclables from your typical garbage. Most of your plastics and cans can be reused in some way or another, and it benefits the environment to send them to a place where they’ll be sorted and dealt with responsibly. Garbage collection services (hey, that’s us!) usually offer this type of service for curbside pickup!

Other methods include incineration for a smaller amount of waste, or turning to a service that takes care for your waste for you. No matter the method, it’s critical that as a community we are mindful of our waste, and put our best foot forward in terms of preserving a healthy planet.

Thinking About Your Waste

To many, garbage is but a thing of the past. Its tossed in a pail, dragged to the curb, and never seen again. But when you're throwing certain things away without thinking of it, you're really losing out on possible materials that have many different applications. After all, sustainability is extremely important in today's society and it begins with those who waste the most -- us. Here are a few things to take note of when throwing out your garbage.

Food has more uses

Before throwing out that extra head of lettuce or extra pieces of peppers from taco night, think about what else you can do with it. Creating a compost pile out of your uneaten food can provide you with an optimal amount of nutrient rich soil for years to come. Not only is it free, but it's much healthier for your plants and shrubbery. Additionally, it decreases the amount of trash thrown out each week. That's less work for everyone!

Recyclables

Do you know how many bottles of water you go through per week? If you're not reusing the bottles, chances are they're ending up in a bin. Consider investing in something a bit more sustainable. Reusable water bottles are great for this, and can even filter out particles before it gets to your mouth. Rao water is extremely clean these days, so taste shouldn't be an issue. If that's not your thing, try reusing the bottle you opened this morning. If you're like many, that recycling bin fills up pretty quickly.

When your waste makes its way to the curb , you'll need someone to haul it away. With over 11,000 happy customers to date, City Carting is your go to waste management service, whether you're residential or commercial. We've got you covered!

Fun Recycling Projects At Home

It’s true that some of your garbage can be reused, but we bet there are a few fun projects you haven’t thought of. With the amount of waste that comes out of a home per week, it might be a good idea to look into other ways of using these items as a sustainable, recyclable project. They say that one man’s trash is another one’s treasure, but what if you could make your trash your own treasure?

Plastic Bottles

Old milk cartons can be used to feed birds! Cut a sizeable hole in the side and poke a hole through the cap. Attach some string to the top and fill the carton with bird seed -- not only have you saved yourself some cash, but the birds can eat too! The same goes with the bottom of plastic bottles. By carefully cutting the bottom and sanding the edge smooth, you can create a tiered jewelry holder, Simply poke a hole in the middle and glue them in place, allowing a little bit of room between each layer for storage!

Old Metal

What about that old dining set? No use anymore? For the intermediate DIY project seekers, you can turn these into gorgeous hooks for coats and sweaters! Bend them into a hook shape, and drill a small hole in the metal. Attach it to the wall and you have a hook! BONUS: You can also twist and bend fork prongs for extra flair.

Old Cans

Aluminum cans are great! With sharp edged they can cut almost anything -- perfect for cookie cutters! Cut the can and carefully lead only the siding left to work with. By cutting the can horizontally into ½’ thick pieces, you can then bend and glue them together in the shape of your choice! They’ll be durable enough to cut through dough, be cleaned, and used for another project!

Not everything has to go to waste, but if you are thinking about throwing your items away, please do it responsibly. City Carting and Recycling proudly hauls away your waste in both commercial and residential applications -- we’d love to help rid your home of waste as well.

The City Carting Touch: What We Have To Help

When it comes to the competence of a company, preparedness is a huge factor in what makes them succeed. At City Carting, we feel as if we’re as prepared as ever for anything you might need from us. Whether you’re looking for residential pickup, or commercial services, we’ve got every type of vehicle to get the job done -- and more importantly, get the job done right.

Residential

Our residential garbage trucks are state of the art vehicles, built to pick up your garbage curbside, load it into the truck, and place it back to where it was. This is synonymous with our recyclables as well, which make it a seamless experience for those looking into residential services.

Commercial

If you own a business, there’s a good chance that a simple garbage pail won’t fit all of your waste. Because of this, we’ve armed ourselves with a fleet of trucks that can load larger containers either from the front of the truck, or the rear. Each one is specifically designed to pick up your container with waste, dispose of it, and place it back to its original position.

Construction

Let’s say you have a big construction job coming up, and need a large container dropped off -- we love pickup trucks, but there’s no way it’s going to be able to tow the large ones on location. Our drop off trucks can place these larger containers wherever you’d like, to make disposing of the garbage an easy process. The best part is, when you’re done, you can give us a call and we’ll swing by and pick them up!

No matter the job, City Carting can handle your waste needs. With over 11,000 independent customers, there’s no surprise that we’re CT and NY’s premier waste management service.

Residential Pickup Best Practices:

Garbage is something we don’t necessarily think about when it gets to the curb. But what about the ones who take it away, and place it in the correct areas? Your residential pickup options are typically limited to a few options, however there are things you might want to note before taking your garbage out to the curb -- we promise, a little goes a long way!

Separation

The differences between recyclables and other garbage are obvious, however some of it isn’t as easy to note as you might think! Between food and something such as a plastic container, there are a few options you have with each. Consider composting your food in the yard! This leads to less garbage, and rich soil! Additionally, be mindful of sharp and dangerous materials. Wrap sharp edges with tape, and do the same with other items. Although it’s out of your hands, there are other people who handle your trash afterwards, and their safety is important, too!

Reuse

Those packages from Amazon are great, but they don’t all have to be thrown away! Think about cardboard and the uses you may get from them afterwards. If you’re the type to do an at-home oil change, this is for you! Keep a few boxes laying around and you can use them to separate yourself from the pavement, and prevent oil from spilling down and staining it. Additionally, you now have FREE boxes for the next holiday gift you have to ship to a family member. In reality, you’re saving yourself from a headache, AND some money!

If you’re thinking about enlisting a new waste management company, Let City Carting know about it! We offer residential and commercial pickup options to over 11,000 people in the CT and NY area!

Electronic Waste Disposal

Electronics are great until, well, they don’t work anymore. While sometimes this isn’t always the case, obsolete pieces of tech often find themselves tossed into corners and closets to collect dust. Instead of hoarding this type of material, why not attempt to get rid of it via your waste company? There are a few things one should know prior to handing sensitive materials over to a landfill. While they may seem obvious, it’s your last shot before they’re gone for good!

Back It Up!

As obvious as it may sound to some, many people throw things out before realizing that they had memories saved on devices such as computers, cameras, and more. If you don’t have a replacement piece of technology just yet, it’s a good idea to plug in an external drive to hold your information before throwing the equipment out, so you don’t regret losing those photos from disney back in ‘96.

Destroy it -- Responsibly.

With everything, there’s no better notion than practicing safe protection methods. If your device is not operating anymore, yet there’s still info on it, it’s a good idea to safely destroy the main components. Similar to cutting up a credit card and shredding documents, breaking a hard drive, or drilling a few holes through it is a great way to preserve your info.

When you’re ready to toss your special electronic waste, give City Carting a call -- we’d love to discuss the easy and carefree methods of throwing out your garbage.

Facts About Your Waste

One of our main goals on earth should be to conserve our resources and make the world a greener place. Unfortunately, that starts with us, and many people don’t truly understand the magnitude of what their waste does to our environment. While there are countless examples of our waste in numbers, a few stand out and are easily remedied with a little mindfulness in what we’re wasting.

  • Food waste is at an all time high. In the US, we throw away 33.7 million tons of food per year, and the number is only rising. Statistically, this adds up to almost 250 lbs per person. This number is enough to fill the empire state building 91 times! Consider composting your food and turning it into rich, nutrient filled soil for your plants!
  • Aluminum can waste translates into a large amount of energy which is typically lost. Recycling 100 cans can result in the ability to light up your bedroom for two weeks! This is important to note if you have an independent waste management service who is responsible for your recyclables that you’re separating them into the proper bins.
  • The EPA estimates that 75% of the US waste stream is recyclable, however we only recycle about 30% of it. This staggering number shows that we as a collective need to be very conscious of the things we’re throwing away. Waste management services (ahem) know a lot about your waste and can really help direct you into properly disposing of everything that can eventually be reused.

When the time comes for you to enlist a waste management service to handle your garbage, City Carting is the way to go. With one of the largest single stream recycling centers in the region, there’s no surprise that our 11,000 independently contracted clients put so much trust in us!

What Can't I Throw In The Trash?

Despite common belief, your waste is very important! Even though you toss it in the garbage bin and get on with your day, it does eventually get picked up, and placed in the proper disposal area. One thing many homeowners are not aware of is the type of waste that cannot be thrown away, and that can result in a big problem. Before tossing away something you’re unsure of, take a look below and see if it belongs in the trash.

  • Motor Oil And Filters. For these items, it’s important that neither of them end up in the trash. Many waste management services do not take them, and it’s important to make sure before tossing it in the trash. On the flip side, many auto part stores and repair shops will gladly recycle your oil and filters for you -- just bring them into the shop!
  • Grass clippings aren’t the best choice. We recommend leaving your grass clippings on the lawn, or placing them into a compost pile. They’re full of water, and can provide the necessary moisture to fertilize plants once they’ve broken down.
  • Batteries and light bulbs. For batteries, these items contain acid and are very dangerous. Many of these items can be collected and recycled at electronic stores, and some home department stores as well. Some light bulbs also contain a small amount of mercury, which is dangerous for human contact. To recycle materials like this, it’s easy to find out where they can be taken. You can bring them to a HHW facility near you, which will dispose of them properly.

For your waste management needs, let City Carting handle your trash. From effective recycling and garbage disposal, we can handle everything from residential to commercial needs!
