Ways To Be Sustainable During Winter

With winter in full-swing, some of us might be falling off of the ‘go green movement that often keeps us from having more waste than we know what to do with. Although we’re in the middle of the season (with more on the way supposedly), it’s sometimes important to be reminded at how you can keep up with your mindful waste management, and make less of an impact on the environment. We’ve highlighted a few refreshers below!

Makeshift Insulation

For insulating specific rooms and area in your home, it’s important to realize that there are very cost effective options for this. In a place such as a garage or your pooch’s house, you can use newspaper, and other recovered materials. This includes cardboard and styrofoam, which come in packages and other forms of shipping materials. These are great ways to keep heat in and block colder air during the colder months.

Batteries

With winter here, you’re sometimes bound to lose power during a storm -- while that might mean you can’t watch your favorite programs on TV, you can practice saving yourself some money and power while it’s out. Keep rechargeable batteries on hand for those times where you need them to power your radio, flashlights, and other things. This is a great way to not have to spend money on batteries each time you need them.

In addition, practicing effective recycling and waste management is a great way to keep yourself from going crazy during the cold season. An independent waste management service is one of the easiest answers to your waste questions!

Recycling More Vs. Recycling Better

Recycling at home is important -- it reduces our footprint, saves everyone money and valuable resources, and so much more! But what’s the best tactic for recycling? Should we be throwing everything we don’t need away? This is a questions asked by many individuals who are conscious of what they’re using and the effect it has on the earth -- so let’s discuss: Do we recycle more, or do we recycle smarter?

Recycling More
For many, recycling can be a way of life. Proper waste management comes with throwing the things you don’t need away, and making room for more. This falls in line with the things that can be recycled, but might have another use. Water bottles, newspaper, and food are all things that we can of course recycle more of, if we’re not being conscious of where it’s being placed. In terms of being mindful and not making a huge amount of waste, this is something that can be handled without a hiccup.

Recycling Smarter

Recycling smarter than you would is something to also consider. While this might mean not tossing everything into the recycling bin, it can help to reuse something at home that could use a spruce up. Think about what we mentioned above -- can you think of a use for each item? We can! Try turning old water bottles into sprinklers, birdfeeders, and more. Old food can be turned into compost, and newspaper can be used for your pet’s insulation, firestarter logs, and so much more. Getting a use out of the items you have sitting around at home can be just as effective to your life as it would be by bringing them to the curb.

3 Ways A Compactor Can Help

Thinking about a compactor might have you thinking to yourself “What would I use that for?’ -- and with good reason! Compactors are typically not something that can provide value to the everyday person, but they actually do provide some sort of good use. Actually, they are much more useful than you might think. Whether you’re a homeowner, business owner, or just looking to get rid of some big items, here are a few reasons to consider a compactor in your near future.

Non Waste Appearance

A compactor is discrete, which can be a great thing for those who don’t want a ‘dirty look’ near their building. Disguised at what really just looks like a large container, you won't be able to tell that a compactor is actually on the premises. Additionally, this is a much ‘neater’ alternative than roll-off containers, as all of the trash is, well, compacted! This provides a benefit as rodents and other critters are far less likely to infiltrate the area due to the lack of offerings for them.

Saves Plastic

By utilizing compactors in everyday life and trash collection, you’re actually saving on the plastic needed to cover and haul it away. On average, this amounts to up to 20 trash liners that can be saved compared to the one needed to cover compacted trash. In actuality, you may not even need to use a bag, which could further reduce footprint overall.

ROI

There are a number of other improvements that a compactor can provide for you. A number of them can be tax write offs, reduced pilferage, savings on additional labor and a higher allotment for current employees, building and document security, and a cleaner environment for all involved.

Things To Do With Your Waste

Instead of throwing out your waste, there has to be something else you can do with it, right? Of course there is! Think about some of the things that make it into the trash -- are they really cycled through their lifespan, or is there another use for them? Chances are, you can make some changes to the things you toss away, and give them a new life they can enjoy, while helping yourself and the environment at the same time!

Old Clothes

Instead of throwing these clothes out, donating them makes a great addition to someone who is less fortunate than you. Additionally, it helps your clothing from ending up in a landfill where it won’t get any use. If they’re tattered or stained, consider using them for something else! Lay it down on the driveway during an oil change, or use it as a towel to wipe up dirt. The possibilities are endless and can really provide you with effective uses.

Cardboard & Paper

Did you ever think of the things you could do with these? Think about animals for a second. This is great insulation for a dog or cat home outdoors when it’s cold. Though we recommend keeping the animals inside when the weather is bad, this can give them a spot to relax during the day if they’ve been playing, without the worry of being too cold. These materials also make great fire starter logs as well, which we’ve highlighted here! Follow those directions similar to that of the leaves, and you have instant and free warmth outside!

Of course, not everything can make it’s way into your lives again, and that’s totally ok. What is important however, is the waste that you end up throwing away, ensuring that it makes it to the proper locations. With n independent waste management service, we make that part easy! Consult with City Carting today and we’ll help you get set up with everything you need to make the process that much easier!
