Summer Items That Don't Go In The Trash

As summer rounds the corner into one of its final legs, it’s important to, as a home or
business owner, refresh on what is and isn’t supposed to be in the trash! Even though
it’s likely already a routine for you and those who live/work in your building, there’s nothing
wrong with taking another look at your habits, and looking for a way to improve.

Old Food/Leftovers

We know how easy it is to take your plate and scrape it into the trash, even if there’s a bit
of food leftover -- and while that sometimes is OK, it’s also important to know what is and
isn’t going to smell bad, and attract unwanted attention from nocturnal critters looking for a
meal. Instead of throwing this away immediately, place your extra food in a separate bag and
throw it in the freezer until it’s time to take out the trash. This prevents odor, and in turn,
animals! Additionally, you can also begin composting certain foods for nutrient-rich soil.

Excess Plastic

Opening a brand new supersoaker for the kids is a great way to keep them entertained and
cool on a hot day -- but the packaging they come in, among many other things, is less than
ideal for regular trash. No matter what, it’s important to always check in on your local ordinances
for what to do with plastic garbage, and if you can safely throw it out a different way. Additionally,
some of these packages are made of rigid plastic, which prompts you to need to be careful,
and think of who is handling your trash afterwards!

Electronics

Sometimes a good garage cleaning is in order when the weather is nice and you can entertain
a quick sale of old items. Instead of just tossing everything away, including old batteries and
outdated electronics, make sure you’re putting some of your things in a recycling bin to bring
somewhere for safe disposal! The acid and components inside these items should always be
thrown out safely -- no matter the season!
